Myrtle Beach Area Guide

Myrtle Beach is a coastal resort city and the heart of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile crescent of beach on South Carolina’s northern coast. Myrtle Beach’s 25,000 residents welcome millions of vacationers to this full-service community each year. Myrtle Beach is the premier resort destination on the East Coast, hosting visitors from around the country and abroad.

The Atlantic Ocean is the number one attraction and the reason so many families visit Myrtle Beach year after year. The community’s clean, wide beaches are extremely inviting and filled with exciting things to do. Myrtle Beach offers a wealth of recreation, entertainment, dining, shopping and vacation opportunities for visitors and tourists. You'll find plenty to enjoy during your visit.

History

Myrtle Beach was incorporated as a town in 1938 and became a city in 1957. Its name comes from the wax myrtle, a shrub that grows abundantly in the area. History records that the first tourists in the area were a party of Spaniards from Hispaniola, who landed about 50 miles north of present-day Myrtle Beach and in 1526, eventually established the first European settlement in the U.S. about 30 miles to the south. That settlement was eventually abandoned.

During the next three centuries, the region's population slowly grew. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, people began to vacation to the area. People began to call Myrtle Beach home as the 1900s progressed.
